Theory of change
theory-of-change-resources
A useful resource list on theories of change put together by Research to Action.
You can also view an M&E workshop write up, useful resources list (doc) and powerpoint from an I-K-Mediary Network virtual workshop held in 2010 on M&E which explored how theory of change and outcome mapping could be applied to intermediary work and discussed web statistics for intermediary work.
Example of using the theory of change as a knowledge intermediary
From Access to Action: Impact Pathways for the IDS Knowledge Services
Downie, A. (2008)
This publication sets out a theory about how the IDS Knowledge Services, as information and knowledge intermediaries, see their contribution to increasing information use, and what role that information plays in development processes and social change. It was produced to guide internal strategic planning and to act as a discussion document for others in this sector.
The theory of change breaks down different kinds of information “use” into immediate, intermediate and higher outcomes:
• Immediate outcome of ‘Access and Debate’
• Intermediate outcome of ‘Understanding and Influence’
• Higher level outcome of ‘Action’
The IDS Knowledge Services department also undertook a process of mapping existing survey data onto these impact pathways. You can view this in the following document: Survey stats on theory of change May09.doc (doc)
Online and collaborative development of a theory of change
One possibility of online and collaborative development of a theory of change could be done using IdeaTree. It enables multiple people to develop a shared network diagram showing how various ideas, people or events are or might be expected to interact.
For more resources on theory of change (ToC) and the differences between ToC and logframes, see the KBF discussion on Theory of change vs Logframes
